Luke 17

The Coming of the Kingdom of God

20 Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”

22 Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. 23 People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. 24 For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

Apostle's Creed

Apostles creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
      creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
      He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      was crucified, died, and was buried;
      he descended to the dead.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
      He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
      the holy Christian church,
      the communion of saints,
      the forgiveness of sins,
      the resurrection of the body,
      and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sermon: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

The Day of the Lord

1 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labour pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.

6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.

9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing

Intercessory Prayer and Lord's Prayer

Intercession 8.11.2020

Look at us and your creation, God our Father.

We beg you: please, let your kingdom come.

See how people torment each other

- spread your peace.

See how hatred destroys coexistence

- reconcile and establish justice.

See how bravely many refuse to hate

- come to their aid.

See how selflessly many open their hearts and hands

- strengthen them.

God our Father.

We beg you: please, let your kingdom come.

See how war soaks your earth with blood

- save your creatures.

Look at the victims we fail to see

- remember and heal their pain.

See how we threaten your creation

- guide efforts to protect the climate.

Look how the politicians argue

- admonish them and remind them of your commandments.

God our Father.

We beg you: please, let your kingdom come.

Look at the refugees and displaced persons all over the world

- protect them.

Look at the ones who mourn and grieve

- wrap them in your comfort.

Look upon the sick

- touch them and heal them.

Look at the dying

- guide them into your eternity.

God our Father.

We beg you: please, let your kingdom come.

Look at your church

- move us by your Holy Spirit.

Look at those responsible in the church

the bishops, the synods, those who preach the gospel in word and deed,

- work through them.

Look at our confirmands and all who accompany them,

- show them the beauty of believing in you.

Look at our St Martini congregation

- make it a place of peace and reconciliation.

God, our Father.

We beg you: please, let your kingdom come.

Trusting in Jesus Christ, we join together in praying:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen.

Benediction

Benediction

The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face shine on you
and be gracious to you;
the Lord turn his face toward you
and give you peace.
